Holding onto toxic feelings? Feeling ready to purge yourself from the cosmic chaos of yesteryear? Release your hot air. Hydrate anew. Perhaps a productive counterpart to anger is dialogue, taking time and making space. We believe in the radical re-imagination of our world, and with that we have to radically reimagine care for our bodies. Using basic elements; air earth water fire, we will explore the therapeutic and cathartic potentialities of steam healing. Several types of steam vapor will made available for use, and participants will learn how to make steam for future use and wild applications.

Good as Gold

A hands-on exploration of the common marigold (Tagetes erectus, patula and Calendula officinalis) as a source of color, a tool for healing and a protector of the urban streetscape. We will highlight several variations of the plant, discovering its multitude of uses in the body, on cloth and as a companion in your home or garden.

The Upturned Table

A temporary restaurant by kids. Through a series of workshops, they’ve been invited to re-imagine the experience of a meal. Achieved through material and conceptual experiences that included dying fabric for napkins and tablecloth, making ceramic dishware and utensils, printing menus on risograph machines, inventing fluxus-inspired scores for eating, and creating dishes like burrito ravioli, and a potion to turn you vegetarian.

Suminigashi, or “floating ink,” is the process of marbling plain paper with water and ink to transform it into something vibrant and colorful. Is it marbling, or is it magic?! Students walk away with ideas about how to apply Suminigashi in their own practices and will create a marbled notebook.

GET LOST

Using inquiry based dérives, we will explore our attachment to destination and a clear path, willingly releasing ourselves and testing our thirst for the mysterious otherness ahead. We will look to the stories, patterns and folklore of those who have ventured into the vast ‘unknowns’ of their day, from (in)famous explorers to the forgotten adventurers who made waves in their respective fields of music, computer science and art practice. By bolstering up our navigating skill-sets for traversing nature’s wild, we will also explore techniques for getting lost in our heads, with our friends and as a practice we apply to our bodies and non-physical space. We will be reading stories, testing out principles, making mind maps, generating a self-published compendium, and “losing” ourselves in the process.

PLANT ALLIES

What does it mean to be healthy? What is a tonic? How did people deal with “getting sick” before Advil & antibiotics? What are wild edibles? What’s an apothecary? We’ll ask questions and experiment with plants as food, medicines and tools. We’ll also talk about how folks throughout history have used plants to survive and thrive. Campers will create their own salves, (skin rubs for stings, itches, dry skin) bug spray, handkerchiefs, drying baskets, methods for identifying and processing plants, and a field guide to BEAM camp.

weaving in the woods

How does a story come together? What are the nuances and layers of a path through the woods? How were your pants made? These questions, alongside many more that are generated in the process, will form the explorations of this domain. Using simple tools and big ideas, we will fashion our own looms, weaving together an existence and understanding of cloth production amidst avid experimentation with technique. We will look at weaving traditions from all over the globe, try out back strap weaving, look at modern technological advancements and find impetus to explore in the work artists and makers exploring the wide world of weaving.

If we take tangible, physical social interactions for granted, we may begin to lose sight of the real work. Are movement, language, spirit part of your practice? How does bodily knowing inform what can be learned from interacting via media-driven and virtual networks? Cues & clues for building a critical lens into your media toolbox.

A conceptual and practical think-tank tasking teenagers to meditate on the ethics of design. We explored a brief history of objects, branding and the ever-present visual strata we navigate in our daily lives. Students used books, websites, magazines and ephemera to seek modalities that embody personal ways of seeing, creating mood boards and channelling styles to tell visual stories.
